I've done this enough times to know what separates a fun night from a miserable one.
⏰ Arrive 30–45 Minutes Early
The best spots — front-center, near the concessions, on flat ground — go fast. Show up early, plant your blanket, and spend that time people-watching. It's better than sitting in traffic at 8 PM anyway.
🦟 Mosquito Repellent Is Non-Negotiable
I cannot stress this enough. You are outdoors at dusk near Illinois grass. Pack bug spray like your life depends on it. Because your evening definitely does. Citronella candles are a nice bonus.
🎒 Pack Layers (Yes, Even in July)
It's 91° at 5 PM and 67° at 9 PM. Illinois weather is unpredictable like that. Bring a light sweatshirt or blanket for the back half of the film. You'll thank yourself.
🍕 Pack Your Own Snacks
This is the whole point of NOT going to a theater. Make a whole event of it — charcuterie board, pizza, whatever floats your boat. Some locations may have food trucks, but don't count on it.
