Fox Valley & McHenry County · Summer 2026 Guide
"Summer out here doesn't have to cost you anything. I've found every free thing worth doing between now and Labor Day — so put down the credit card and go enjoy where you live."
I've been selling homes in the Fox Valley for over twenty years, and one of my favorite things to tell buyers is this: you're not just buying a house — you're buying into a community that does summer better than almost anywhere in Chicagoland. And a huge chunk of that summer? Completely, 100% free. Outdoor concerts at sunset. Movies under the stars. Parades and festivals and libraries that actually try. If you're a family trying to make memories without maxing out a Visa, welcome to your summer guide.

📚 Fox River Valley Public Library — Summer Programs
The library is the most underrated free resource in the Fox Valley, and if you're not using it this summer, you're leaving money (and fun) on the table.
"Level Up at Your Library" — 2026 Summer Reading Challenge
The theme is Level Up at Your Library — designed for gamers, book lovers, and adventure-seekers of all ages. Kids (and adults!) track their reading through Beanstack or pick up a paper quest log at any branch. Complete the challenge and you earn: a free book AND a free ticket to the annual pool party at Dolphin Cove on August 4th.
The challenge runs through July 31, so if your kids haven't registered yet, get on it today. Sign up at frvpld.info.
Every summer I see families spending $200 on enrichment activities while their library card sits forgotten in a drawer. The library has free programs, free passes to museums, and now — a free summer challenge that literally ends in a pool party. It's not glamorous. It also doesn't cost anything. Use it.
— Jenny Jones, The Jones Team🌳 Always Free in the Fox Valley
No event calendar needed. These are the free summer staples that are here all season, every day.
Fox River Trail
40+ miles of paved trail through every Fox Valley community. Bike, walk, or run through Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia, Elgin, Carpentersville, and more. One of the best free assets in all of Chicagoland.
Fox River Parks
Nearly every Fox Valley town has a beautiful riverfront park — River Park in Geneva, Pottawatomie in St. Charles, Riverview in Batavia, Carpenter Park in Carpentersville. Pack a picnic. It costs nothing.
Splash Pads
Multiple communities have free splash pads for the little ones. Check your local park district website for locations and hours — most are free during the day, and the kids absolutely do not care that it's not a water park.
Fishing the Fox
A fishing license is cheap. The Fox River is full of fish. The experience of a kid catching their first bass off a dock in Geneva or Batavia? Priceless. (We know that's a cliché. It's also true.)
Library Programs
Beyond the Summer Reading Challenge, the Fox River Valley Public Library hosts free programs, story times, and events all summer. Check frvpld.info for the full calendar — there's usually something every week.
Farmers Markets
Most Fox Valley farmers markets are free to browse — Geneva, St. Charles, Elgin, Algonquin, and more all run weekly markets through summer. Local produce, live music, and actual community. Go on a weekend morning.
This Is What You're Buying Into
When I help families find homes in the Fox Valley, I don't just talk about square footage and school districts. I talk about the summers. The free concerts on the river. The parades your kids will remember. The community that shows up for itself. If you're thinking about making a move, let's find you a home in one of these communities — and then you can spend the rest of the summer doing all of this for free.
