This Week's Home Hacks: Bookshelf Flips, Bathroom Tricks, and IKEA Magic

By Jenny Jones, Baird & Warner · August 28, 2026 · Home Hacks · Organizing · Budget DIY

A quick sort through this week's home hacks alert — most of it's noise, but a few of these are actually worth your Saturday.

Worth Doing: The $5 Bookshelf Flip

A DIYer profiled by Dengarden turned a $5 thrift store find into a genuine bookshelf upgrade, and the internet is impressed. This is the kind of low-cost, high-impact project that photographs well for listing photos later — worth trying even if you're not selling anytime soon.

Worth Doing: The 30-Second Bathroom Habit

Tom's Guide is pushing a 30-second daily bathroom habit that supposedly replaces the dreaded weekend deep-clean. If it actually saves you an hour every Saturday, that's a hack worth adopting regardless of whether the marketing copy is a little breathless about it.

Worth Doing: The IKEA Bathroom Storage Hack

Dengarden also flagged a HULTARP-based IKEA hack that turns cheap parts into real bathroom storage. Bathrooms are notoriously hard to stage and organize — anything that adds storage without a remodel budget earns a spot on this list.

Worth Knowing: Get Ahead of Fall Now

Yahoo ran a list of seven things you should clean before you close your windows for the season. A little unglamorous, but it's the kind of maintenance that keeps small problems from becoming expensive ones — and expensive problems are exactly what show up on a home inspection.

Four hacks, zero fluff. Go forth and thrift-flip responsibly. — Jenny
