Woodstock Adds a Wood-Fired Pizza Joint and Another National Shout-Out

The New Restaurant

Per Shaw Local, Oak & Alchemy is bringing wood-fired pizza and barbecue to Woodstock. Two things I will always personally investigate, ideally in the same sitting.

More to the point: independent restaurants opening in a downtown is one of the most reliable leading indicators I know of. Restaurateurs are risking their own money on a bet that enough people will walk past that door. When they keep making that bet in the same downtown, year after year, it tells you something the census data won't tell you for another three years.

The National Nod (and the Pink Square)

World Atlas included Woodstock in its roundup of eight of the most adorable small towns in Illinois, alongside places like Galena, Long Grove and St. Charles. Is a listicle a rigorous economic indicator? No. Do out-of-state buyers read exactly these things while deciding where to look? Absolutely, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't sat in a car with a relocation client lately.

And then there was the Square lit up in pink through Tuesday in memory of Dolly Parton, per Shaw Local. That one's not about real estate at all. It's about a town that shows up — for celebrations, for anniversaries, for losses. Woodstock does that consistently, and people notice.

What This Means for Woodstock Values

Woodstock has spent years converting charm into actual demand. A walkable historic square with an opera house, a farmers market, restaurants worth driving to, and Metra access is a genuinely rare combination in McHenry County — and buyers are paying for it. Homes within walking distance of the Square have held a premium over comparable houses on the outskirts, and every new business that makes the Square more of a destination widens that gap.

The flip side, and I'd be doing you a disservice not to say it: charm has priced in. Woodstock is no longer the McHenry County bargain it was ten years ago. If you're shopping there expecting 2016 numbers, you're going to be disappointed. What you're buying now is a proven downtown, not an undiscovered one — and those cost more for a reason.
