Memorial Day in the NW Suburbs: Where to Show Up, Stand Up, and Pay Respect

By Jenny Jones, Baird & Warner · May 21, 2026 · Local Events · Carpentersville · Elgin Area

Yes, fire up the grill. Yes, crack the cold one. But before you do — show up somewhere that matters. The NW suburbs do Memorial Day right, and the list is short, sincere, and easy to fit into your weekend.

One of the things I love about selling homes in this corner of Illinois is that nobody phones in Memorial Day. From Carpentersville to Elgin and out toward the Dundees, you'll find ceremonies that aren't performative — they're personal. Veterans show up. Families show up. The flags go up at half-staff and people actually notice.

Here's what's on the calendar for next weekend, so you can plan around it instead of around it.

Carpentersville — Wreath-Laying Ceremony

When: Monday, May 25, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

Where: Veterans Garden in Carpenter Park, Carpentersville

A traditional wreath-laying observance hosted by the Village of Carpentersville. Short, meaningful, and worth the 30 minutes. Bring the kids — this is the kind of thing that sticks with them in ways your TikTok algorithm never will.

The full Elgin-area lineup includes additional services across surrounding communities (Elgin, South Elgin, and beyond), and the Chicago Tribune has the complete schedule. Whether you're in Sleepy Hollow, Algonquin, East Dundee, or Crystal Lake, there's almost certainly a ceremony within 15 minutes of your driveway.

Why your real estate agent is writing about Memorial Day

Because the strength of a neighborhood is not measured by its granite countertops. It's measured by whether the village shows up for its veterans, whether the streets are flagged for the parade, whether the local diner offers free coffee to anyone in uniform. These are the things buyers feel when they drive through a town for the first time — even if they can't articulate why one suburb gives them goosebumps and another doesn't.

The NW suburbs have that goosebump factor. This weekend is one of the days you really see it.

Bring a flag. Bring tissues. And maybe bring a thermos — Monday mornings in May can still be a brisk reminder that this is, in fact, Illinois.

Know your neighbors? Tag them.

Share this post so they don't sleep through Monday morning.
