Algonquin Is Officially Ditching the Garbage Sticker Program in 2026

by The Jones Team

Well…this is the end of an era.

Starting in June 2026, the Village of Algonquin is officially moving away from the traditional garbage sticker program and transitioning residents into a monthly cart-based garbage collection system. Translation? No more digging through junk drawers looking for garbage stickers at 6:12am while whispering “I KNOW I bought more of these…”

Under the Village’s new residential waste collection program, residents will automatically receive a 95-gallon refuse cart with a flat monthly fee structure instead of paying per bag or sticker. Residents will also have the option to request a smaller 65-gallon cart, while qualifying seniors age 65+ can receive a discounted 35-gallon cart option. (Algonquin)

The Village says the updated program is designed to simplify service and create a more consistent collection system for residents. The new base monthly rate for the standard refuse cart program will be $21.84 per month beginning June 2026. Senior residents using the 35-gallon cart option will pay $13.50 per month. (Algonquin)

So what exactly is changing?

What Residents Need to Know

🚮 The Sticker System Is Going Away

For years, Algonquin residents could purchase garbage stickers individually and attach them to trash bags or cans for collection. That system is now being phased out in favor of standardized refuse carts with a recurring monthly service fee. (Algonquin)

Honestly? This probably means fewer:

  • overflowing mystery trash piles

  • raccoon buffet situations

  • bags ripped open during storms

  • “Wait…did you put a sticker on that?” household arguments

Progress.

🛒 No More Last-Minute Sticker Runs

Residents previously had to purchase stickers from local retailers or through Groot. Stickers were sold at locations like Jewel, Meijer, and Village Hall. (Algonquin)

Now, residents will simply pay a monthly rate as part of the garbage service program instead of constantly restocking stickers like it’s some weird suburban scavenger hunt.

♻️ Recycling Still Continues

Curbside recycling service remains included as part of the Village’s waste collection program. Collection days are not changing under the new setup. (Algonquin)

👵 Senior Discounts Still Exist

The Village is continuing discounted service options for seniors, including a smaller 35-gallon cart at a reduced monthly rate. (Algonquin)

Why This Is Actually Pretty Typical

More and more communities are moving toward cart-based systems because they’re:

  • cleaner

  • more efficient

  • easier for automated collection

  • safer for workers

  • more predictable for budgeting and billing

And let’s be honest…most homeowners already prefer the convenience of wheeling a cart to the curb versus calculating how many stickers they have left after a holiday cleanup or basement purge.

One of the things people genuinely love about living in Algonquin is that the Village tends to stay proactive with infrastructure and community services. From parks and recreation to snow removal, downtown improvements, and municipal services, Algonquin consistently operates more like a community planning ahead than one constantly playing catch-up.

Even if…yes…we are all now paying monthly for our garbage like another subscription service. Somewhere your Netflix account just got a new roommate.
