National Night Out Is Taking Over the NW Suburbs on August 4 — Here's Where to Show Up

Every police department in a ten-mile radius apparently got the same memo this week: throw a cookout, invite the neighborhood, and call it civic duty. National Night Out hits Tuesday, August 4, and half our coverage area is participating.

National Night Out is the annual event where police departments trade the usual "call us if something's wrong" relationship for an afternoon of free hot dogs, K-9 demos, and actually talking to the people they serve. This year it's a genuinely coordinated affair across our patch of the map, and if you haven't been to one, it's worth your Tuesday evening.

Who's hosting what

• Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, West Dundee & East Dundee are co-hosting alongside the Dundee Township Park District, with Harper College Police Department pitching in — all converging at Carpenter Park in Carpentersville on Tuesday, August 4.
• Lake in the Hills police are hosting their own community cookout the same day, backed by the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District, the Algonquin Area Public Library, and the Parks and Recreation Department. The free family event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at Village Hall, 600 Harvest Gate. National Night Out is designed to build relationships between law enforcement and the community while promoting crime prevention, village officials said. The event will feature a variety of activities, including a LifeNet helicopter landing and an opportunity to meet the flight crew, if available. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office will also present a live K-9 demonstration, according to village officials.

That's four-plus municipalities, two fire districts, a library, a park district, and a community college police force all pointed at the same night. When this many local institutions coordinate on the same evening, that's not an accident — it's a sign that "community policing" isn't just a phrase on a press release around here.
