Woodstock and Crystal Lake Just Got Named Two of Illinois' Most Hospitable Towns — And I'm Not Shocked

By Jenny Jones, Baird & Warner · May 21, 2026 · Woodstock · Crystal Lake · Local Pride

World Atlas just dropped its list of the 11 Most Hospitable Towns in Illinois, and let me cut to the chase: two of them are right here in the NW suburbs. Brag time? Brag time.

I've been selling real estate in this corner of Illinois for over two decades. When clients ask me what makes the NW suburbs different from, oh, basically anywhere else in Chicagoland, I usually struggle to name just one thing. So thank you, World Atlas, for doing the homework for me.

Made the list: Fulton · Libertyville · Geneva · Galena · Mount Carroll · Woodstock · Winnetka · Crystal Lake · (and three others)

Why Woodstock keeps showing up on these lists

Look, if you've never wandered through downtown Woodstock Square on a Saturday morning, you're doing your weekends wrong. Cobblestones. The opera house. Independent bookstores. The kind of downtown where the people behind the counter remember your dog's name. World Atlas specifically called out downtown Woodstock as a calling-card destination, and they're not wrong.

From a real estate standpoint? Woodstock has been one of the more interesting markets to watch. You can still find character — actual character, not "Tuscan villa" subdivisions — at price points that would make a North Shore buyer weep with envy. That combination of charm, walkable downtown, and reasonable entry points keeps demand strong year after year.

And Crystal Lake — quietly elite the entire time

Crystal Lake is the kind of suburb that doesn't need to brag about itself. The schools, the lake (yes, there's an actual lake — surprise!), the park district, downtown growth, family-oriented amenities — it's a recipe that's been working since well before I started selling houses here. Getting the World Atlas nod is just the latest piece of proof.

And remember those two recent closings — $657K on Bardwell Lane, $468K on Autumncrest? Yeah. That's a market that's reaping the rewards of the kind of intangibles that show up on a "hospitable towns" list.

What "hospitable" actually means in real estate terms

Here's the unglamorous truth: rankings like this matter because they get circulated. They get shared on Facebook. They show up when out-of-state relocators are doing their "where should we live near Chicago?" Google searches. They reinforce demand, which supports values, which is excellent news if you happen to own a home in either Woodstock or Crystal Lake right now.

If you've been on the fence about whether to list this year, articles like this are a quiet little tailwind. Don't waste it.

Translation for my fellow homeowners: your house just got a free PR boost from World Atlas. You're welcome.

Brag rights worth sharing.

If you live (or grew up) in Woodstock or Crystal Lake, pass this along. Your hometown earned it.
